7th Annual Low Country Hook Ocean Race

The Chatham Sailing Club and the Yacht Club of Hilton Head Island will host the Seventh Annual Hook Ocean Race on Saturday, September 17, 2022. The press is invited to cover the exciting regatta morning start off Hilton Head Island, as well as the late-afternoon finish-line action and evening ceremonies at The Landings Marina. Interviews available on-site or by prior arrangement.
The course will start in Calibogue Sound off Hilton Head Island, head south past Tybee Island, and then head up Wassaw Sound to end at Landings Marina on Skidaway Island. The first group starts around 10am. Depending on winds, it will take about six hours for the fleet to reach Wassaw Sound and finish.

There is no better place for boating than the Low Country of South Carolina and Georgia, and it has been a popular spot for sailing for generations. This regatta offers sailors a unique experience with a course that resembles a large hook, hence the name. The Hook Race is the only open ocean water sailing event in the Low Country. While many area boat clubs host annual regattas in inland waterways, the Hook offers the opportunity to compete in open ocean waters for several hours which historically was a large part of sailboat racing. The competitors’ meeting will be held in-person at Harbour Town Yacht Basin on Hilton Head Island Friday at 6pm. On Saturday, Skidaway Island Boat Club will host a Dockside Bar party at Landings Harbor Marina from 3 to 5pm. CSC will then host a dinner with awards presentation at the Landings Harbor picnic grounds after 6pm. Yachts will enter the competition in one of three classes, Cruising, Spinnaker, and Non-Spinnaker (spinnakers are the large colorful balloon-like sails extending in front of a sailing vessel). The race is open to sailboats larger than 22 feet. A published handicap system will be used to adjust the entrants to equivalent times so both large and small sailboats will be competing fairly. WJCL’s Light the Way

WJCL ABC 22 is proud to announce the 6th annual Light the Way Campaign. The effort collects donations for the children and adult victims of domestic violence.

The station is partnering with the Tiffani Taylor Gallery and the Thibault Gallery as well as Tanger Outlets Savannah and Hilton Head. The partners are hoping to gather items for those people being served by Hopeful Horizons in Beaufort, S.C. and Safe Shelter in Savannah, Ga.

The campaign runs December 2-18. Donations are collected at the shopper services at both Tanger Outlets locations as well as the Thibault Gallery (815 Bay Street, Beaufort) and the Tiffani Taylor Gallery (11 Whitaker Street, Savannah). Both galleries have special displays featuring bell ornaments that contain brief and modest shopping lists for specific families in need. Simply drop by those locations to get those bells.
